Anne Trubek on the Art of Tweeting

In the article “Why Tweet? (And How To Do It),” Anne Trubek discusses all the benefits of having and utilizing twitter.  Being an avid twitter user herself, Trubek relates her own experiences with twitter to reveal its various uses. She breaks up tweets into four categories: headlines, asking questions, self-contained quips, and comments on other people’s tweets. Trubek stresses the importance of tweets being attention grabbing, whether it is an informative headline for a news article or a funny self-contained quip. Not only should the tweets be interesting to read, but people should have an interest in tweeting in general if they are going to partake in this social site. Tweeting should be enjoyable and fun; she explains, “Do not tweet because you have been told to, or because you feel you ‘should.'” Since she is appealing to adults in her generation and young adults, she includes that the pluses of tweeting are that it can most likely help a person’s “business/social/visibility,” but the main benefit is that it is fun and social. Another way Trubek tries to persuade the skeptics is by pointing out how “it is a great way to become a clearer, more concise writer, because it forces you to choose your words carefully.” Tweeting appears to be an all around fun and beneficial activity that is not just limited to silly tweets about someone’s lunch.

Anne Trubek’s “Why Tweet? (And How To Do It)”

Anne Trubek wanted to establish the difference between having a twitter as a chore and having a twitter as a daily routine. It seems as if her article was written to become the deciding factor for potential tweeters. As a tenured professor of writing at the Oberlin College, Trubek is clearly a credible source, and not some random die-hard tweeter. Her points on having a Twitter account are that it will probably benefit business, visibility, and social life, which are all great points. However she does go on to state to potential tweeters that if they find it as a chore, rather than an everyday routine, then there should be no reason that they should make a Twitter account or even continue tweeting. But to those readers who are actually interested in this social media, she follows her professor-instincts, and offers her readers simple guidelines on how to sign up, tweet, and what various functions Twitter has to offer to their users.
